A Continuity Checklist for Fiction Manuscripts

Track dates, character details, locations and story rules in one continuity document to prevent small contradictions from distracting readers.

Create a reference sheet for character ages, appearance, relationships, schedules and important objects. Note the sequence of events and travel time between locations. For speculative fiction, record the rules of the imagined world and check that later scenes follow them consistently.

Run a dedicated continuity pass after structural revisions, since moved scenes can introduce new conflicts. A spreadsheet or simple timeline is often enough. Continuity checks support immersion by letting readers stay inside the story instead of stopping to question a changed detail.
